It seems like just yesterday you and I were sitting in your truck parked at Mom's back door the day after Dad died. We were listening to the Amazing Grace tape you and Nae made for the funeral. I lost it when you wrapped your arms around me and said "I miss him so much already honey". Your words were my exact thoughts the morning I was told you had left us. I love you Mighty Oak. Thanks big brother, for everything. "An Oak Tree Named Joe" A mighty wind blew night and day. It stole the oak tree's leaves away, Then snapped its boughs and pulled its bark Until the oak was tired and stark. But still the oak tree held its ground While other trees fell all around. The weary wind gave up and spoke, "How can you still be standing, Oak?" The oak tree said, "I know that you Can break each branch of mine in two, Carry every leaf away, Shake my limbs, and make me sway. But I have roots stretched in the earth, Growing stronger since my birth. You'll never touch them, for you see, They are the deepest part of me. Until today, I wasn't sure Of just how much I could endure. But now I've found, with thanks to you, I'm stronger than I ever knew. " (Author Unknown,Title Personalized)

We loved Joe very much. He was a true Renaissance man. But even more important than that he was a Warrior for Christ, a good friend, an unselfish, caring and loving human being. He will be missed. We will see each other again in heaven.

Joe and I worked together at Heartland I remember his warm smile and "can-do' attitude. He helped find solutions to whatever "problem" we gave him. My heart is saddened to hear of your loss.

I knew Joe when he was employed in Council Bluffs and I worked with him at Heartland AEA. What a great man he was and respected by many! I have missed seeing and chatting with Joe since my retirement but he lives in my heart. Special thoughts and prayers come to the family.

Liz and family, I want you to all know that you are in my thoughts and prayers. I know he fought a hard battle with the cancer and I know you are all grateful for the time you were able to share with him following the diagnosis. I have no doubt that he is at peace and in God's arms now. Know that I am thinking of you and grateful to you as well for all his care during his illness. I know my children and grandchildren will certainly miss him as he was a very good father to our children and grandfather to our grandchildren. Liz - you and Joe made everyone feel so welcome on the 4th of July and made this a very special holiday for all the family. Dee

I had the pleasure of working with Joe when I served as principal of Sacred Heart WDM and Joe was Transportation Director for WDM Public Schools. He was a creative thinker! We reconnected over coffee at Heartland AEA when I joined the staff. I had the utmost respect for Joe. My thoughts and prayers are with your family. Sincerely, Anita Westerhaus
